The Lore of the Air Ship

Before the Air Jordan 1, Michael Jordan rocked a sneaker called the Air Ship during his rookie year with the Chicago Bulls. For a long time, nobody really cared about this shoe. However, as sneaker culture has exploded the past 10 years, people started to take note. What was that shoe MJ was wearing?

Of course, Nike and Jordan Brand took note, and early this year they released the Air Ship for the first time since all the way back in the mid ’80s. The combined the Air Ship in a special limited edition pack along with a special white/red Air Jordan 1 colorway that Jordan only wore once or twice. They called this pack the ‘New Beginnings’ Pack.

I was fortunate to get my hands on this pack thanks to the good people at Jordan Brand. Though the pack resells for well over $1000, I wore both pairs within a few weeks of getting them. The thought of reselling a shoe always crosses my mind when I get them, but I heard the hoops the team at JB went through to get these for me, so I figured it was only right to rock them.

Just like with my Chuck Taylors, I think the Air Ship goes well with denim. Of course, the issue is the dye bleeding onto the shoes. Overall, I’m fine with it because I never plan on selling them. I absolutely love the comfort of the Air Ship – they’re like wrestling shoes. Super lightweight and great padding. If these retros are anything like the ones MJ wore, it’s no wonder he liked them so much.
