Sneaker Review: The Russell Westbrook ‘Why Not’ AJ16 x Converse Pack

If someone asked you what your two favorite sneakers were, what would you say? For Houston Rockets superstar and Jordan Team member Russell Westbrook, he picked the timeless Converse Chuck 70 and the polarizing Air Jordan 16. Jordan Brand and Converse combined these two silhouettes into a pack, officially listed as ‘The Unexpected RW SP Pack’ on the box label. I’ve also seen it called the Jordan ‘Why Not?’ x Converse Pack.

Inspired by Westbrook’s gritty play, his love of leather, and his time spent on the outdoor courts growing up, both the Chuck 70 and Air Jordan 16 are covered in thickly-embroidered broken chain links along with metal studs you find on leather jackets. The Chuck 70 is all-white with a chipped-paint texture on the medial portion of the shoe. The Air Jordan 16 features its patented removable shroud – this time with the addition of velcro along with its magnetic metal clips for a secure fit.

The main concern with a pack featuring a Chuck 70 and a non-Chuck 70 is that the Chuck 70 runs much bigger than a typical sneaker. Converse resolved this issue by sizing down this version one half size. There is also a thicker padded leather insole inside, so the fit is much better. You’ll still probably want to wear a thick sock with the Chuck 70, as it still runs a bit larger than the complimentary Air Jordan 16. Overall I’d say to order true to size. So, if you’re an 11 like me, order the pack in a size 11.

Style-wise, both sneakers are not for the faint of heart – they are bold and brash just like the Brodie’s game. They pair well with black denim and of course a leather jacket. I’ve always appreciated Westbrook’s style off the court and his ability to attack the rim on it. Several years ago, Westbrook became the main face of Jordan Brand and even has his own sneaker line now.

The Jordan “Why Not?” x Converse Pack is set to release on October 2nd.
