Are you ready to break through your running limits and experience the next level of speed? Whether you’re an avid runner or just getting started, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2 may just be the sneaker you’re looking for. Building on the success of its previous versions, the Next%2 takes innovation and performance to new heights, promising to be the secret weapon for runners aiming to achieve personal bests. In this review, I’ll dive into the key features that make this running shoe a game-changer.

I’ve worn a lot of Nike running sneakers over the years, and I can honestly say that this may be my favorite shoe to train in. The Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next%2 maintains the sleek and aerodynamic cooler design that has become synonymous with the Vaporfly series. The shoe’s upper is constructed with lightweight, breathable material, ensuring a comfortable fit that wraps snugly around your foot. The vibrant color options not only add a touch of style but also reflect the energy and speed this shoe is designed to deliver.

ZoomX Vaporfly Next – What are they called again?

Make no mistake – the name of the sneaker alone may seem a bit intimidating. I can’t remember exactly what it’s called half the time myself. Why Nike uses so many words to describe a sneaker is beyond me, especially when people love to post their sneakers on social media and use hashtags. But, every word means something very specific, so, let’s break down exactly why this sneaker is called what it is.

ZoomX Foam

At the heart of the Vaporfly Next%2 lies the revolutionary ZoomX midsole foam. This high-tech foam provides an exceptional combination of cushioning and responsiveness, offering a plush feel while maximizing energy return.

“I thought Zoom meant ‘Air’,” you might ask. And, you’d be right. It’s a bit confusing, and I don’t exactly know why Nike chose such a similar name to their Air cushioning, but ZoomX has nothing to do with Air. Technically, ZoomX is a light, soft, responsive foam that delivers amazing energy return. So basically, you’re going to feel a lot more spring in your step compared to other foams.

Vaporfly Mode

In addition to the ZoomX foam, this Nike Vaporfly Next model also features a midsole equipped with a full-length carbon-fiber plate, strategically placed to enhance propulsion and propel you forward with each stride. It actually feels like you’re cheating when you run in them because of that plate.

For that reason, these sneakers actually should be worn for everyday use and walking. And, for that matter, if you ever see a model called a ‘Vaporfly,’ you will know that they are strictly meant for serious runs. Some will argue – and I would agree – that these sneakers shouldn’t even be allowed for use in professional races because of the unfair advantage they give the runner.

Comfort and Fit

Runners will appreciate the attention to detail in the Nike Zoom Vaporfly’s design, aimed at optimizing comfort during longer distances runs. The padded collar and tongue, along with the precisely engineered upper, contribute to a secure and comfortable fit. The shoe’s lightweight construction minimizes fatigue, allowing you to maintain peak performance throughout your run.

Vaporfly shoes are designed to be lightweight, reducing the overall load on your feet and legs. This feature is especially beneficial for speed workouts where agility and a quick turnover are crucial.

Performance on the Road

The real magic of the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next%2 comes to life on the road. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a casual runner aiming for a new personal record, the Next%2 delivers an unparalleled running experience. The combination of ZoomX foam and the carbon-fiber plate propels you forward, making each step feel effortless. The shoe’s ability to reduce energy loss and increase efficiency can make a noticeable difference in your running times.

The Nike Vaporfly series, including the Vaporfly Next% and its iterations, is well-regarded for speed workouts and racing. These shoes are specifically designed to enhance performance for long-distance running, including marathons and other races.

While the Vaporfly series is excellent for speed workouts and racing, it’s essential to note that the shoes are specifically designed for road running. If your speed workouts involve track running, you might want to consider track-specific racing flats. Additionally, individual comfort preferences can vary, so it’s advisable to try on the shoes and assess how they feel during your specific training activities. Overall, many runners find the Nike Vaporfly series to be a valuable asset for achieving and maintaining high speeds during workouts and races.

Traction and Durability

The outsole of the Vaporfly Next%2 is equipped with durable rubber in key areas, ensuring reliable traction on various surfaces. While this shoe is primarily designed for road running, it can handle different terrains without compromising performance. The durability of the materials used means that the Next%2 is built to withstand the demands of high-mileage training and race days alike.

The Next% Mentality

It’s a bit difficult to explain exactly what Next% means, but basically, it’s a sports research lab at Nike that pushes athletes further and further in world athletics. For example, the Breaking2 project was part of Next% as an endeavor to break the two-hour marathon barrier amongst elite runners. It had never been done before until Eliud Kipchoge did it in 2019 wearing the AlphaFly Next%. Say what you want about Nike and their shoes, but no one had run a marathon in under 2 hours until Kipchoge did it in a pair of Nike sneakers.

On October 12, 2019, in Vienna, Austria, Kipchoge took on the monumental challenge known as the Ineos 1:59 Challenge. Backed by the British chemical company Ineos, the event was meticulously planned to create the optimal conditions for Kipchoge’s attempt to break the 2-hour marathon barrier. The carefully selected course along the Prater Hauptallee in Vienna provided a flat and straight route, minimizing elevation changes and wind resistance. This allowed Kipchoge to maintain a consistent and efficient pace throughout the race.

A team of elite pacemakers, including some of the world’s top distance runners, rotated in and out during the race, forming a human wall to shield Kipchoge from the wind and help him maintain the required pace. As Kipchoge entered the final stretch of the 42.195-kilometer course, the clock ticking down, it became evident that he was about to achieve something previously thought impossible. With the world watching, Eliud Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 40 seconds, breaking the 2-hour marathon barrier and making history.

While Kipchoge’s achievement did not count as an official world record due to the controlled conditions and rotating pacemakers, it represented a symbolic triumph for human potential and the pursuit of excellence. Kipchoge’s feat transcended the sport of running, inspiring elite athletes and non-athletes alike to reach for their own “impossible” goals.

As a result, Eliud Kipchoge has etched his name in history as one of the greatest marathoners of all time. This remarkable feat not only showcased Kipchoge’s unparalleled athleticism but also pushed the boundaries of human endurance. The record-breaking run solidified Kipchoge’s status as a running legend, and his legacy continues to inspire a new generation of athletes to dream big and strive for greatness.

Back in 2017

It’s pretty crazy to think that the original Vaporfly was released for the first time five years ago back in 2017. I remember trying the previous model on at the Nike Flatiron store in NYC back then and was amazed at how effortless my strides were. They are an expensive shoe and the hefty retail price tag kept me from buying them back then, but I was fortunate to be gifted a new version and can honestly say that I was smiling all the way through my first easy runs in them. I couldn’t believe how fun the new Vaporfly was to wear, and I honestly wish I could wear them around as casual every day sneakers.

Final Thoughts

If you’re new to running, I’d probably say to hold off on purchasing these Vaporfly’s unless you’re a sneaker nerd and love cool, techy shoes. If you’re an experienced runner, I’d say you absolutely MUST try them out. The good thing is they are super lightweight with the perfect blend of cushioning and support.

They are definitely not the most durable sneakers ever, so if you are hard on your shoes for long runs and wear them a lot and not just on race day, they may only last you 6-9 months. But, if you’re trying to push yourself to be a faster runner, they are the best shoe to do it in and these are the leader of the super shoe pack.

In the competitive world of best running shoes, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next%2 stands out as a true performer. Whether you’re chasing a podium finish for a half marathon or simply aiming to set a new personal record, this great shoe has the technology and design to make it possible. The combination of ZoomX foam, full-length carbon plate, and thoughtful design elements creates a running experience that feels like you’re running on air.

Lace up a pair, hit the road, and get ready to unleash your full potential. The Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next%2 is not just a running shoe; it’s a catalyst for speed and success and will take you to a new level of performance.
